While my stock Toyota front struts are still going strong, I'd like to replace them with something better.  A few months ago, I replaced the rear shocks with KYB GR2's, and wondered if these would fit the All-Trac.  Again, as I have posted before, when looking for shocks, only the Gabriels and Monroes seem to come up on most of the onlne and brick-and-mortar retailers.  I did find that KYB GR2's for the Tercel 4WD do fit the rear of the Corolla All-Trac.  Does any one know  if the front strust intented for the Tercel 4WD will work?

So, I posted the above quite some time ago, but I'm reviving it again now that this site has more members.  
Does anyone know which KYB front struts will work on the All-Tracs?   As with the rear shocks, KYB's website does not list any compatible models of struts or shocks for 4WD Corollas, only regular 2WD Corollas.  I was considering KYB strut models 234035 and 234036.

Well, I talked to KYB America HQ in Illinois; they say that the 234035 and 234036 won't fit since the sprint plate on which the insulators and springs rest is "too high."  But I was referred to KYB Europe.  Makes me wonder if putting them in would automatically add height due to higher bottom of spring height.  I'd have to get some measurements first to see if I understoood the tech's explanation.  

I also checked out that Rolla club thread on lifting an AE95.

Eh? Lifting?? =D I live in a city where only about 20% of the streets get their snow removed, and we end up with these enormous ruts of snow to drive through for about 5 months a year.....I cringe everytime I feel the undercarriage scrape, my suspension is also going. I've been thinking about spending the $1200 and having them replace the "Height Adjust Seals" as well, or possibly cheaping out and overriding the system for about $800. (CDN $$)

I think I'm going to wait and see what you turn up before I make any decisions. =P

How is this project going Datsa?

I had to put the project on hold due to finances. I'm a full-time student now, and still self-employed; business has been slow, so I'm no longer splurging on auto parts as I once had.  Maybe over Spring Break I can get back to this project.

In the meantime I need to do some more research, perhaps from one of those Australian/New Zealand sites.  Fortunately, where I live (coastal California) it doesn't snow regularly; the nearest real snow is about 60 miles away. After our winter storms, those local mountains (5000 - 11000 feet) are packed with snow. The local snow can still shows lots of white stuff.  If those don't melt by by Spring Break, I can take the A-T up there.

Any updates on this project Datsa? I'm desperately needing to replace my suspension, and I think I'm going to over ride the height-adjust!

No updates yet. Finances still suck and my A-T needs a new muffler since the old one rusted through   But I definitely need to do something soon, since the front end bottoms out occasionally.  Maybe I can just splurge. Thanks, I'll get back on researching front-end shocks, but I a leaning towards just getting the Toyota rebadged KYBs since I know they are available, but they are expensive.
I haven't given up yet . . .

i have them fitted on my car at the moment

call up a supplier and get them to look them up on the computer

ended up costing me round the 300-350 mark for the four came with bump stop kit as well

the shocks make all the difference can take corners very fast now

I'm gonna order some KYB 343149 's for the rear, on the advice of your other thread in this section! My Carib came with a set of Monroe's for the front that are brand new, but all the reviews I've read about them say they're awful so I'd like to know if you got any KYB's that fit the front?? I'm also scared to jump in and have them not fit.

You know... Bilstein makes shocks for the All-Trac too

Those parts numbers are the Bilsteins listed for the AE95.  I have those on my sedan, the control is fantastic, the overall performance is wonderful!!!  

They are NOT typically available in the USA, I had to import them from Germany.


the 3138# is for the fronts, the 6356 fits the rears.  

I'm not sure the Sedan's suspension is the same as the wagon, though?

Not knowing as much about these Toyotas as I know of some others... I can't be definitive, but if you check out one of the many Toyota parts listins(I use toyodiy.com), there isn't any major differences between the two, at least when it comes to the suspension.   Also, the Bilstein catalog does NOT specify sedan or wagon in its listing

FWIW I couldn't believe the performance of the Bilsteins when I installed them in a '76 Corolla I had in the late 70's. Without a doubt the best strut or shock I've experienced to date.

Well, going on some advice from a guy in the Toyotanation forums I'm ordering 234035 and 234036 for the front. I'm thinking KYB america was being conservative and is possibly wrong, or at least wrong enough that someone with knowledge can properly modify the mounting to fit our cars. I'm gonna gamble on it, the car is booked for Wednesday. I ordered them through my mechanic so at least if they don't fit he can return them with no hassles, although it costs a lot more to do that, I'll be paying $120 per side plus labor.

I took the plunge and KYB 234035 & KYB 234036 do indeed fit on the front of my 91 Carib wagon.

I think KYB America is just being conservative so you don't end up wasting your money.

Yeah, when my mechanic went to order them he couldn't find any listings at all for AE95 suspension... here in Canada the suppliers are awful for recognizing this car. =\

He had to look under AE92/86 to find those KYB part numbers listed

This is great news.  I was told that the the 234035 and 234036 fit too high for these cars. Well, if they do fit, I can now order them and install them myself.  Great! Somehow i missed this thread, but I am glad I have found it.
