Hey everyone, I just bought my first Toyota a few days ago (you can guess what it is since I'm posting here ). I'm new to Toyotas and these wagons, so I'll probably have tons of questions. I'm already finding answers here (and a few elsewhere), so I hope you guys don't mind.
I don't have any of my own pics of my new (used) wagon, but here is one from the Craigslist post that I found my wagon in:
1988, DLX, 5 speed, no body rust anywhere that I can see, and I've crawled under & around almost the entire thing to check. I did notice a little bit of rust inside the driver side door, where there appears to be a drain for water? I'm sure a wire wheel on my Dremel can take care of that, then throw on some primer temporarily until I eventually get the car repainted. The paint isn't in good shape, as you can see the clearcoat has been baked off by the Florida sun:
I suppose that's better than having rust issues No offense guys! Also you can see the driver side headlight is orangey, it had a crack or hole in it. Although someone filled it, it wasn't before water or something got inside and discolored the housing (rust? don't know what it is). I'll be making a list of stuff I will want to replace on this wagon, and was glad to see someone posted a link to a site with Toyota part numbers (and a few places they can be ordered from). Interior shot from the ad:
The wagon isn't quite prefect, the biggest issue being the rear hatch & part of the left fender has a nasty dent. I think it's fixable, but for now it should be alright since the hatch still opens/closes and seals seemingly well enough. Didn't hear any wind whistling either, as I was speeding down the expressway from St. Pete to come back home at 75 mph.
I guess that's all for now. I'll try to get better pics soon, after I change the oil and give it a good wash! I spent the better part of yesterday cleaning the interior, as it was pretty dirty inside. Also replaced all the bulbs except headlights, and the wipers... I do my own repair/maintenance as much as I possibly can, so that was just a small start to maintaining this beauty
PS -- somewhere on here, someone was wondering how to get new members. Maybe if some of us also post at bigger Toyota forums like ToyotaNation, we could have a signature with a link to this forum? Maybe someone can draw one up as a small graphic, so all we would need to do is use the graphic and make it a clickable link. That is, if other forums would allow for that (just message a moderator and ask). I forget now if I had found this forum through mention on TN, or a Google search. Anyways just an idea.
Thanks! I washed it & changed the oil today, along with swapping out a few more bulbs. I got a few more pics... here's a closeup of that dent. The more I open/close the hatch, the more I think that the damage affected it. It seems it's slightly off kilter at the bottom.
And here's a shot from inside looking at my other two cars. There's a joke here somewhere... what did the del Sol say to the LeBaron?
You can really see here how dark that tint is!
I've got some of the interior panels taken out at the moment, since I want to work on whatever is behind them. I don't want to risk breaking anything by constantly pulling them off. I need to get into the dash soon, try to pull out the CD player and either get it wired up (doesn't work right now) or replaced. Also need to figure out why the clock doesn't work...
The dent was...hm...nothing to deal with yourself I think. Especially the corner. It's a job for someone with skill. The headlight and vents must be easy to find on any junkyard, they will fit from any Corolla from 88-92.

Thanks... from looking at pics of 88 Corollas, I guess the corner lights are different. Good to know that the headlights are universal! I want to replace this soon:
And if the interiors are the same for wagons, sedans, etc I want to get a dash clock. I think mine is missing! I have yet to take apart the dash, but that will be tomorrow, I hope. I want some music when I'm driving and need to get in there! (The CD player doesn't work or isn't hooked up at all...)
I want to get a blank for this hole, mostly because I want to install some switches there:
Thought about installing my own cup holder in the ash tray area. Or is that what I was reading about here, that you can order one from Toyota?
Thanks, I'll look out for one! I need to make a shopping list with all the stuff I need to pick up from a junkyard. There are a lot of little things I'm finding missing, like dash screws, covers, and the ash tray... even though I've thought about making a box to put in its place, since I don't smoke.
Speaking of ash tray, I know where the connector and the longer wire with the clear bulb at the end go, but what about that grey one with the blue skin on the bulb? I can't seem to find where it would fit under the dash.
And are these bulbs easy to find replacements for? Even as LEDs?
While I was taking apart the dash to see what was up with the clock (it's gone! lol) and stereo (no wiring harness adaptors), I found all of this under the ash tray area:
You're right! If you take a closer look at the clock you can see that the buttons are not there = the unit iself is missing. Another misson for the junkyard. Since you have money now... The hole at the left of the steering wheel should hold the switch to the rear foglights. The bulbs are of standard type and can be bought on any shop that has spare parts for cars. But only white I think. You can carefully cut and peel of the blue rubber on the old bulbs and put it on the new ones. The left bulb on the picture goes to the lighter - to lighten up the ring that goes around it. Headlights are the same but the corner lights comes in two models: one for hatchback and wagon and one for liftback and sedan.
I have all those parts in a spare car that are missing - including ashtray - but I live in Europe - otherwise you could have got them for free
Yikes! That headlight has seen better days. Your jackpot makes me hope that these All-Tracs suffer from a 'black hole' phenomenon not unlike that which can be experienced with a first gen Prius cupholder, or a early '90s dodge caravan center console drawer. This makes me want to pull my dash apart. Funny thing? Where you have a screen for a clock, my '88 DX has dashboard plastic. How cheap do you have to be to not put a clock in a new car?
Thanks guys. Nizzehult, I don't think the US models have rear fogs. I know in Japan and Europe that their cars get them, but here for some reason we don't. I think my cigarette lighter was replaced, because the ring around the lighter is black instead of clear. That makes a lot of sense now, though. I guess I'll add another item to my junkyard list, or somehow remove the light. And thanks for the offer on parts!
I wonder if someone had swapped part of the dash in my wagon at one point in time. Maybe that's why I have a clock? It's also an '88 and a DLX. As for black holes, I found a lot of spare change and paperclips (previous owners were lawyers) under the seats and center console, and in the trunk of my del Sol when I bought that car last summer. Here's some pics of the stuff I found when cleaning out the del Sol: pic 1, pic 2, pic 3, pic 4...
Those missing dash vents are very commonplace; the dash is functionally identical to the dash on regular non-All-Trac Toyota Corollas. I would go get them from a junkyard Corolla with a dash that is matching in color to yours. As far as the body damage is concerned, if you are good at body work, or can find someone, they could fix most of the damaged rear quarter panel and fender.
You probably won't be able to find that rear wiper cover at a junkyard because it seems to be unique to All-Tracs unless someone can tell me I'm wrong. You may want to use the http://www.toyodiy.com database to find the part number, and then go to http://www.1sttoyotaparts.com or http://www.parts.com to order the cover.
Be careful about the headlights, the AE92 won't fit, I just experienced this problem. It has to do with the top mounting tab on the headlight assembly, the ones that fit will have a slight rise to them. I can see that yours in the picture requires this rise, same as mine did.
I have a couple of AE92 lights to prove my troubles! haha

Does any one know if there are any other toyota headlights that are interchangeable?
Regarding those little dash globes - they're the same in all corollas of the same period You can find plenty of them especially if there's a self service wrecker near you..
Corolla 4wd??? Does such a thing even exist???!
