My little RHD is one hell of a money pit right now.

I just took it for a salvage inspection which is basically an out-of-province complete inspection, and its failed. Its cost me $2000 in parts and labor up to this point, and I'm about to really jump in with both feet....

Steering Rack and Pinion
R. Front CV Axle (Complete Assy)
Power Steering Pump and Hose
Serpentine Belt
Rear brake shoes and wheel cylinder

I have to replace all of the above before it is legal to drive. Ugh, going back to school is really kicking my a** financially, and I don't want to let this car go, especially now that I'm already $2000 into it. =\

Are you able to do any of the work yourself? You could definitely do the belt yourself since you barely need any tools (just a wrench or two). If you have access to a jack the rear shoes aren't a terribly hard job to do either.

However that is a daunting amount of money, especially if you're in school. It's a hard decision to make.. good luck with it.

I'm pretty fortunate in the sense that my mechanic is a family friend, so, he accepts payment plans with low pressure. =P

I'm going to take a run at making this happen. I can get the Rack and Pinion re-manufactured from Japan for $495 + shipping. so around $700 at my house.

Its going to end up around $2000 I think. Grrrr I can't believe I finally fall in love with a car and she rapes me by circumstance! haha

Just an update: Finally got the re-manufactured rack and pinion from Japan, and the car went to the mechanic Monday for a long list of goodies including new brakes all around. She should stop on a dime when I get it back.

Anyway, I wanted to put a bit of a note on this one: If you change the steering rack, you have to actually unbolt the motor mounts and lift the motor a few inches. It said so on Alldata, but my mechanic disagreed with me when he had the remanned rack sitting in front of him, looking all small and easy to maneuver. haha

SO, Hopefully have my girl back Monday, make a small bend in my bumper welds and I'll take some pics!

In the meantime I'm driving a chrysler dynasty, ugh. =(

Good luck... lol, I replaced my Chrysler LeBaron convertible with a Honda del Sol, and have never regretted it!  Technically I replaced the LeBaron with my All-Trac wagon, since I had all three cars at one point, with the wagon being my latest purchase.

Got my car back today, *RE*-Inspection tomorrow which it should pass with no problems. Driving it with all new steering components is gonna take some getting used to, I almost side-swiped someone changing lanes. hahhaha YIKES, its a whole bunch more sensitive.

Gotta adjust the bumper mount a bit and I'll finally have pics!
