Hi all, newbie here. '89 All-trac corolla DX wagon. Started as an occasional problem, now constant. Starts and idles fine (750-800rpm) while warming up. Once she's warm won't idle and dies when stopping at red light or whatever. Sometimes idles real low (500rpm) and acts like it wants to die. Before problem started she would idle smoothly around 600rpm. I pulled the intake hose off the TB and it looked really clean in there. Air filter is clean; running out of ideas. I need to get a repair manual, should i spring for a Toyota factory manual? Thanks all

Howdy - I have this same issue going on. Planning to pull the TB and scrub it, then do a voltage check across the fuel cut and idle speed sensor. I know my timing is a little retarded (literally), which might have something to do with that.

I've heard talk that the cold start injector might be the culprit of this idling trouble, but I'm not clear what the issue with it is, specifically. I know that my cold start injector is loose in its housing atop the engine block, and that the hose between it and the TB is worn and loose...I keep meaning to do a full hose replacement one of these days. Maybe check that out.

Before replacing parts, do some cleaning and hose-tightening.

Pull the air cleaner and open up the throttle body.  Get some carburetor cleaner and clean out any carbon on the vane that opens into the throttle body chamber.

Vacuum out the air cleaner or replace it if it is too dirty.

Check he integrity and fit of all the vacuum hoses in the engine compartment.  Cracked or leaky  hoses or loose connections can mean poor performance.

Tighten loose bolts on parts attached to the intake manifold and the fuel injector rail.  Tighten loose cold start injector and check the injector for leaks.

Check the integrity of the seats of the spark plug wires going to the spark plugs.  Are they on tight?

Also, check that all four ignition wires have the right resistance and voltage from the distributor.

is the distributor leaking oil? then you have a damaged O-ring perhaps allowing oil to get into the distributor housing.

Check engine timing and idle speed (800 rpm idle).

If you don't have one already, get a repair manual; I recommend the genuine Toyota All-Trac manual, but they are hard to find these days.  Try eBay.

Remember: clean and tighten.
