Well I just got a call from my shop, bad news.  Blown head gasket.  This comes after I replaced timing belt and water pump, radiator, upper motor due to previous owner timing belt snapping and replacing valves.

It has rust, but not a complete rust bucket.  It is solid.  Front fenders, and doors and hood all have very minimal rust.  It is a 5 speed with 16X,xxx miles on it.  The color is the dark blue.  I miss her but I just cant drop $1,000 for a head gasket job.

Anybody in the MN area interested in a great parts car?

bummer...nice color too. i was under the impression 4AFEs were non-interference engines - perhaps not. looks like there are many useful parts for someone to pick from.

I guess Im not 100% sure about valves snapping.  But the previous owner said there was a new top half of the engine so I just assumed it was cause of a snapped timing belt.  Until the headgasket it drove like a champ.  Im just down.  Do I spend $1,000 to fix it?  Or is it over and time for parts.  This job is way outta my league.  I'll see if any All-trac lovers wanna buy a parts car.  Otherwise I might sell some other toys to keep this toy.

Wow, I love that color!  I can't believe it costs $1000 to replace a headgasket... not questioning you.  I would try to find some Toyota enthusiasts in your area (check the major Toyota forums) and see if you can get someone to help you keep your All-Trac running!  That shouldn't cost nearly as much as taking it to a shop.  Just make sure the person is trustworthy and has experience with major work on engines.  The rust is a bit sad to see, but otherwise you said it drives fine... I wouldn't part it out if it's a running vehicle!  (Having said that, though, should you ever want to part it out I would love to have that gauge cluster and the sunvisors! )

What is the switch on the far left of the dash, right next to the airvent?  I should also ask what the switches are to the right of the steering wheel next to the middle arivents...

The switches on the left is the rear windshield wiper and fluid switch.  And then the two on the right side are I BELIEVE cruise control on/off switch and rear defrost switch.  The car is sitting up at the shop right now.  The place I have it at right now is a very well known shop.  I went to high school with the owner back in the day.  Very honest guys.  I've made 2 other calls to local shops and I got higher quotes.

As of right now, I am thinking I think the All-Trac is going to drive again.  My dad and me are going to do it this summer.  He is a mechanic but works out of town 5 days a week.  So its hard to get help...last thing he wants to do when he gets in town is to do more work.  I'll keep an update.

Thats the better idea I think, because you won't get much for it the way it sits, and its looks to be in too good of shape to send off to the junkyard! =)

If I were you, I would save up some bucks, and put together a list of things to do on that car. I'm guessing you have to take quite a bit apart to do a head gasket, so while you're taking things apart and putting it together again, recondition, clean, replace seals etc. That way, you've got less maintenance that could pop up by surprise later. Maybe just me, but I'm the type that prefers to pay a lesser amount and not have any surprises. Sure, you might end up doing something that might have never broken, so you have to find your cost balance. **Disclaimer-I've worked in Insurance** hahaha Example: my rear brakes needed done, might as well do the bearings.

Best of luck, I look forward to the updates!

OK, that's weird about the buttons.  On my wagon, also a DX but from 88, there is nothing on the left side (literally, when I bought it, someone lost the blank) so I popped in a coin holder blank from the junkyard.  The right side switches are rear wiper / washer, and defrost.  Must be a change to the base models throughout the years.  Maybe we can document this in a separate topic?
