Well I finally got around to doing the CV axle (Toyota Factory Manual or TFM calls it a "drive shaft"). The boot had torn and it was clicking really loud.
1.) You will need a 30mm deep 1/2" drive socket. A shallow socket bottoms out on the axle shaft causing it to slip off.
2.) Break the axle nut loose while the weight if the car is on the wheel. TFM says remove wheel and apply brake. A little difficult to do by yourself.
3) Be prepared to fight some VERY tight nuts and bolts. Everything is torqued way over 100fp's. Invest in a set of 1/2" drive metric sockets up to 30mm. I had to use a long breaker bar with a cheater bar on it for everything.
4) What holds the axle in the tranny? TFM does not address this question. Its a snap ring at the end of the axle. So you just "drive " the axle out with a hammer and brass drift.
5) Where is the tranny filler plug? Another mystery NOT mentioned in the TFM. Its directly under the Air box, which must be removed to re-fill the tranny oil. Which, by the way, should pour out of the side of the tranny when you remove the axle shaft.

A fairly simple job that the average person could do in 2-3 hours.
