I believe my alternator is on the way out the door, my windows are rolling up slow, and when the car is sitting idle if I happen to need such useless devices as say .... my headlights, or maybe pressing on my brakes, my car idles at about 400rpm and shakes very badly.

I'm pretty surprised to learn that our stock alternators put out 60amps, or if you were lucky, you got a 70amp model at best. This is disappointing, considering the stereo upgrades I've been doing, and that I want to add a couple PIAA lights that I bought. They are only about 4-5amps each however, combined with the 5-10 extra amps the stereo is capable of using, I'm running into a possible problem. I know the ECU etc can take probably 40amps at peak, throw in the heater for another 20 amps, normal headlights, etc. suddenly you've got a big party with no amps! =(

I'm researching some high output alternators, but all of them seem to put out too much power and cost too much. I'm going to call some local shops around here, I'll post what ends up happening.

From my "friend" with the EPC, I found out the alternator was used on 4AF, 4AFE, 5AFE and some others, used in Corolla's, Sprinter, Sprinter Carib, Corona, and Carina's with those engines.

Ok, so... I got my hands on the larger model alternator that came on the 4AFE's its a denso rebuilt by a local shop, very nice vietnamese gentleman at Auto World in Calgary! It puts out between 80 and 90 amps now, and is slightly larger in size than my original as well.

However, my electrical gremlin is not ousted, my idle drops to between 5-600 rpm when I'm using any electrical components, wipers, lights, windows, even brakes.

I'd like to know more. My A-T is mostly manual whereas yours is electrical (manual door locks, manual windows, except for the sunroof). I'd like to replace my alternator with a heftier model.  I'm interested in which model of alternator you used?

I'm pretty sure I have located the problem, its something called an Idle-Up Actuator, and on our vehicles its referred to as an Idle-Up Diaphragm. I hope to address the problem early next week. EPC is showing that we have two of them located on the engine side of the firewall, attached with vacuum tubes to the intake. Alldata however only lists one, so, I'll let you know how it pans out.

I believe the alternator I have on there is made for a 4AGE. I also had a couple quotes from places in the US to send me a high-output alternator, they were priced around $250-$300 and will put out 150-300 amps if you want. I was told they will bolt right on as well. I am not 100% sure of the model # though, if you'd like I can call the shop and find out.

Supposedly the alternator was replaced on my A-T about a year before I bought it.  I should check it for a part number, as I'm curious what model it is and what kind of output it's capable of.  (Would prefer a little more output as I'm planning on some audio upgrading.)

Pretty cool, that EPC. I see a diaphragm near the throttle body cable attachment.  I'll check my FSM (field service manual).

What do you mean? I had the Alternator on the old car, it put out very good voltage but did not fix my idle problem. That car is now dead, and it looks like the alternator is squished a little bit. =\

In another thread ("The importance of good ground wires" under Repair), I posted the following:

Here is something I came across while Googling "alternator upgrade"  It is not for a Corolla, but it may be a lead:

Another site when searching under "Alternator high output 4afe" yielded:
