Hey Guys, every AE95 that I have looked at online before buying mine has extractors instead of the factory manifold and now I think I know why, it seems that as the engine mounts weaken with age the exhaust manifold takes up the weight of the engine and this causes it to eventually crack. Is this an Australian only issue? perhaps our routing is different?

Anyway I have been quoted $500. to have a new set of extractors fitted because apparently the standard corolla extractors don't fit. Does anyone know if there are any wrecks in Melbourne that I can get the extractors off? any other options? I can't afford $500 right now because I am studying. Cheers

Got a set of brand new crossflow extractors fitted for $425.00 happy with the outcome, seems to get a little more pep out of the 4afe. Old Manifold had cracked all the way around!

From where did you get yours?
My exhaust manifold cracked, and I just went to the junkyard, bought a used un-cracked exhaust manifold from a "regular" 4AFE Corolla, and installed it.  So far, it has not cracked, but I also replaced the front engine mount.

But I'd love to get more pep out of the 4AFE engine.

Hi Datsa,
My local Muffler place installed the extractors - apparently it is the same as the FWD Corolla's of the same year but needs some extra bending work (the mechanic showed me this in his catalogue). I think although the car feels better now I have not had much to compare it against and I should think that an original uncracked one would be quite similar.
Going to a junkyard this weekend. quite excited by it - getting a new rear bumper and tow bar for $90 each and some Tercel 4wd parts to fix my other car.
cheers.

I had the same problem & posted some photo's in here somewhere.. - manifold cracked all the way through - very common problem - I was just lucky to be told of some 2ndhand extractors at a self serve wreckers $30 EASY!

Corolla 4wd??? Does such a thing even exist???!

Maybe we need a way of putting all similar threads together in the one place...

Well this is an old post but ,I just pulled mine off today. Cracked all the way around. I pulled one of a 92 they seem to be the same? The newer one (I have a 90) Alltrac wagon hasd a heat sheild that has vents on the outside shield and on the inner shield.

The 90 has two unventilated shields, I'm guessing the lack of vents is what causes the cracking issues?

Actually, there are some changes that Toyota made to the 4AFE engine during the production run of these AE95s.
Most of the changes were to the shape of the intake manifold, fuel rail, and the ports on the head (because of changes to the corresponding ports on the intake manifold).  So I assume that there were changes made to the exhaust manifold to accommodate changes made on the exhaust ports, but I cannot be sure.

Early model 4AFEs had very curved "C"-shaped intake manifolds, while later models had more L-shaped intake manifolds.  For photos of these differences, check out this thread posted here: http://www.alltracwagon.net/forum/m-1301874383/s-all/.  Since your car is 1990, you probably have the improved L-shaped intake manifold, so an exhaust manifold from a '92 should fit.

I don't now if the lack of vents is causing the cracking.  When I replaced my exhaust manifold, I put on an shield/cover with vents just in case that was the problem.  The vents allow air to flow over the exhaust manifold, cooling it perhaps, but they also lower the exhaust temperature of the outgoing exhaust gases.  Based on thermodynamics of the Carnot cycle, engines are more efficient when there is a greater difference in temperature between incoming air and outgoing exhaust: which is why people put on fancy cone-shaped or circular intakes, so  cooler air enters the engine, and put on fancy mandrel exhausts to hotter air exists the exhaust at a faster rate == more efficiency == more horsepower.

Yep L shaped intake and yes the exhuast manifold is exactly the same only the heat sheilds are diffrent. I'm wondering if the flat spot will be gone when I get this installed?
