I just got done putting a new clutch in and the motor and transmission are together. My question, is there anyone out here who has put their transfer case on without pulling the motor off(again). I originally removed the transfer case to facillitate easier removal and installation of the motor. Now that the motor is finally back on I cant put the transfer case on again without clearance issues on the side of the motor. Surely someone has replaced their clutch on these cars.

I found the solution. I had done some judicial grinding to the side of the block. A little bit at a time until the transfer case simply bolted on. My biggest apprehension is that I would grind into a water jacket. but if you look at the picture above I only needed to grind on the bottom rib along with one bolt hole bottom left. By doing so I could bolt the transfer case without unbolting the motor which I worked so hard to bolt back on. In hindsight I should have left the transfer case on and bolt the motor with transfer case intact to tranny. But with my struggle I wanted to share another way. I have driven the car 600 miles so far with no adverse affects but I will update this post If I come across any. |

Thanks for posting about this... I fear the day I need to replace my clutch. I'm a little intimidated by all the extras of having an AWD vehicle, compared to the relative simplicity of a FWD one.  |

I removed the engine and left the transmission in the car when I replaced my clutch. MUCH easier.
You probably could have just loosened the transmission from the engine a bit and tilted it aside an inch or two to gain an extra bit of room to slip the transfer case in. Glad you figured it out, though. |

I am not looking forward to this eather. I have Camry All Trac and it requires you to pull the engine, to change the clutch...I have heard that you can remove the transfer case so you don't so you dont have to remove the engine just to change the clutch...I will be testing this out pretty soon. I know the Camry and Corolla are different but when you deal the the All Trac Versions of both they are similar. |

I've read that you can pull the tranny/transfer case with the engine, and when separating or putting them back together, you sort of place the engine against the tranny, but tilted toward the exhaust side (away from the transfer case). Then rotate the engine in place and bolt it up. But I've never removed my engine / tranny before, so I'm not sure how much cursing & wrestling there is!  |
