So glad you guys like it,

My car impressed me but it is one of those base models that you know has more potential...

I worked with a couple of guys about 18months ago. One was right into his wrx & the other had a late model monaro, & both were into 4wd's these guys got me hooked.

They asked me about my car & urged me to learn more about it & what mod's I could do...
(they couldn't believe I was a maintenance guy who could fix pumps & broken down building systems but had no clue what was under the bonnet of my car!)

I swear to god 18months ago I didn't know what a plenum was, didn't know what naturally aspirated was & I found Lars's car & started using it as my screen saver, then I was talking to my mates saying: I dunno what it's got in it??? they have all these weird numbers?? 4afe 4age etc.

it's been great learning...
I'm still learning, like recently found out all the various different sizes for clutch wheels in 4afe's (200mm) & 20v's (200 - 212mm)  & 4agze's (225 - 230mm)

Happy to say my GZE'S got the great big 230mm - My basic presumption is the larger surface area means better power transference??

Hey Lars, I noticed you ran a 100kw 4AGE intake & I'm guessing that means the small port engine? The runners look pretty long which I've read helps with mid range torque.

I wanna keep the super charger, fit it with a new sized pulley kit & run a front mount intercooler plumbed back to a nice sized plenum with long runners.
(I read up on the ford pulley idea - sounds like sh*t & trouble)
I've been assured mine's a big port 4agze (How do I check for sure?)
Now the only 4age bigports I know of had the TVIS intake & I wouldn't want that with a supercharger.
Are there any big port intakes that don't use the TVIS system?

..think I just remembered where to find my answers

Interested in any feed back to any of the comments above either way..

In reading a bit more I think I can get a TVIS intake & just remove the little throttle plates

hahahahahahahahah That's sooo funny - just sent you a PM too!!!

Hey man I'm not so desperate I'd steal - It'll all come to me - I know it will. This build may take some time but I'm enjoying the process.

Just bought engine stand & pair off jack stands - about to bid on trolley jack.

Might get some ramps as well.

Got my eye on several other car components too, some researching still going on around intercoolers etc..

Has 130,000ks, the EVO3 4G63 2.0 Turbo with front mount intercooler, recaro seats, all electrics etc...

Goes really hard already!

Has anyone been in them? Ive had a rvr sportsgear, but not a HyperGear.

Ill put up pics when i get my phone back

Snds good Lars!

Yeah, I remember way back.. you posting a pic somewhere of an older mitsubishi wagon & I think your signature at the time said something about business & surfing - did you ever import cars? or did my wacko brain just make that up??

I know the green wagon is ancient history & the model / technology is getting a bit old now.. but it's still cool that you show interest in this forum..

I remember reading about the early mitsu lancers how they were blowing away subarus at one stage, which really ended up galvanising subaru to make all the wrx's we know of today..

In a world full of wrx's. nissan sivias & mitsu evo's

I'm gonna enjoy building my beast - as you know.. they are the under rated ugly duckling that can turn swan

So what's the HP / KW specs & what's the dif' between sports & hyper?

Quoted from TBOWGN

This pic is currently my screen saver. Both, something to study carefully & something to inspire

Thanks both for joining guys & offering assistance. I'm sure I'll be contacting you again in the future.
My 4agze build thread has begun - posting in both forums - there's not a lot to show yet:
I currently have 1 & 1/2 4agze motors but am still holding out for AE95 with sunroof & have nearly finished modifying run down old shed into proper workshop.

Current plan is to disassemble motor clean it up, take it to an engine builder for honing & piston rings.

Will do some porting & re-assemble the head myself, then put it all back together in stock form, do the conversion, get it engineered then look at other options either sc pulleys or turbo - not sure yet.

hi guys, came across this thread while researching a clutch.

i have a question, hoping someone with experience can answer. i have a 20v silvertop in an ae95 - it fails to disengage (can't put it into gear while the engine is running).

i have the engine half out, just waiting on a hoist to finish the job. i'm not sure what clutch was put in it, and more to the point if this was the reason for failure. i've read conflicting reports on what clutch to use, anywhere from 212mm to 225mm. i was planning to measure the flywheel but not sure this is the right approach given it's the original gearbox on a silvertop.

can anyone give me a definitive answer on what size (and model # would be fantastic) clutch i should be purchasing?

Hi Shane, welcome, ...try & post in the appropriate forum please.
IE. 'drivetrain' or 'repair' forums not 'photos'

Not sure why your clutch is stuck, but you're the second person I know of who has a 20v SilverTop in an AE95 who's experienced a stuck clutch.

If your engine's half out, I'd inspect the clutch & flywheel for any obvious signs that somethings not right - of course take your time & check everything else is in good working order too, like your gearbox,  clutch pedal & cable etc.

BTW Are you trying to 'lift' the engine out???
If so... you're in for a head ache.
The engine is designed to drop out from underneath. I have the repair manual for this car if you need a hand.

I'm guessing...but the problem may be the difference between flywheel & clutch diameters.
Ideally you want matching items.
IE. original silvertop clutch or similar. 212mm fly wheel with 212mm clutch set up.

Having said that I now recall the 4afe engine has a 210mm flywheel, the 20v's are 212mm.
So your old clutch may be worn out & getting too hot/sticky from the higher revving 20v with slightly more contact area.

If this turns out to be the case, I'd suggest you search ebay for a 4age 212mm exedy heavy duty clutch, ...from time to time you can find secondhand ones with low km's on them.
A heavy duty clutch will best suit the combination of higher revving engine combined with the heavy drive train of the ae95's AWD system.

Here's a table showing the various 4age & 7a series engine flywheel sizes.
http://s-86.com/s-flywheels.html

Have an email chat w/Sam @ SQ engineering if you have any further questions regarding your engine. He's a cool guy - dedicated to silvertops.

http://s-86.com/index.html

Good luck & be sure to let us know how you go, including some pics for all others to learn...

cheers

hey, thought i'd post the outcome - I actually didn't get this until just now while looking for something else. thanks for offer of help. i'd love an elec. copy of either 4age or ae95 (even ae92, and i forget what the rear-end matches, ae82?).

turned out to be a broken (relatively unworn) clutch plate. i bought a kit locally in the end, USA have them for less than 1/2 price delivered, but you have to watch the spline diameter as there are a few different ones around and i didn't want to take the risk.

i did end up dropping it through the bottom, mostly because i was happy to drop the gearbox out once it was clear and leave the motor 'hanging'. this was a waste of time in the end as it proved particularly difficult to put the box back on like this (not to mention increasing the risk of stuffing up the alignment) and ended up dropping it all the way anyway. I did read others (more experienced) took them from the top.

BTW: the flywheel size is 225mm (spline 29.. i'm not sure if it's the only odd-one out of the 4AFE engines, but not listed on that site link you posted...
PS. i'll try post the right forum in next time
