I was cleaning out my inbox & came across these pic's from when I first began my research into these cool wagons nearly 2 years ago.
I'd nearly forgotten about them. A guy I know via internet only, was giving me a lot of helpful advice on his build.

I emailed him again recently & he gave me permission to post these pics of his silvertop conversion.

Some comments from the modifier...

Hi

Yer my lights have a custom cover i made. It started life as an aunger std headlight cover.

I also put on m3 type mirrors (easy to fit)but there rubbish to use ..look great and have indicators built in.

Dont know if there are any pics around but i also put in a custom boot floor and a custom second  fuse box for stereo and amps including options for spot lights etc etc..The boot set up had fans for cooling and power take off for a fridge.

It started life as a base model so i added a tach dash which was very easy for any one really. Then i installed a gti/sx dash which was a pain in the arse but got there in the end.I also did the white dials install myself.

As a note the center console is ae95 specific as i tryed installing a dash and center console with the center console not fitting well even with mods.

Its due to the ae95 having a higher tranny tunnel. The trd shift kit was a piece of cake to fit.

As i have stated and will again get a front cut or at least work out a package deal with your imported of choice.

Hope this helps a bit more for you.

Hi ya

With the diff lock you wont actually loose the mechanism as i's built into the center diff, All one piece. What you loose is the vacuum cylinder that remotely engages and disengages it.It fairly large.Like a small cars brake booster. It still leaves a gear stick size rod with which you can manual engage.

I'm not sure how much force is needed to do this and or weather it needs to be held in lock mode but I'm sure if your only going off road 20% off the time something could be made up to hold it in place if needed. Having a guess i;d say just turn off the car push pull the rod on the difflock and away you go!

As far as the clutch goes the box is an E57? Basically its a modified 4agze box. E series are stronger than C series, C series are in 4age twin cams and 20v engine front drive cars and come in 5-6 speed but are not compatible with the 4wd.

Back to the clutch look up exidy cluth web site and check out the different sizes for you model and then select the closest size flywheel clutch available for the 4agze. As the motor has good torque and will be off road go the bigger the better approach for drivabilty and smoothness.

If you go smaller it will be like lightning the flywheel for better zippyiness and revability but at the cost of low speed torqeyness.

I used a smaller flywheel off the 20v and low speed in first due to the motors lack off torque and 4wd and weight had a hard time as it would bog down and i would have to clutch it on steep hills if under 10-15  k’s per hour.. Emerald remember

With the motor either get the best low k version you can so as its got good life in it or get a high k version cheap and rebuild it.

Also buy with loom and ecu as there not cheap separate. Make sure you get an intercooler and as many bits as you can like air piping all accessories like starter motor, alternator, AirConditoning & PowerSteering pump and lines etc.

So many little things to mention but if you get the bits right first time it should be a very easy project with the exception of the wiring loom as there a b****.

Any workshop manual for a efi ae92 will do, make sure it covers at least the twin cam 4age. Most of the bits that are different to the wagon are easy basic mechanics.

Big thanks to original author JL.

These cars were first built over 20years ago & in my opinion I think just a few people around the globe are beginning to understand their worth.
I suspect that's largely due to a lot of people brushing it off, knowing that it had an economy spec 4afe engine & even more people confused it with the previous tercel 4wd which didn't have as much power in the engine or strength in the drive train...

What a lot of people don't realise is, apart from the gear ratios & some minor differences the drive train is very similar to the early 1990 world rally winning GT4
'Kebin' has a good side by side photo of the alltrac & GT4 3SGTE box's in his toymods build thread.
