Advice on a few repairs

Hi,

I'm posting as I'm the happy new owner of a '91 All-Trac DX with 194k miles on it. I am pretty much a beginner in terms of auto mechanic knowledge but really want to learn and apply some information.

The engine was rebuilt 60k miles ago and runs fine (seems maybe to run a bit hot, but the engine temp needle sits just below halfway on the gauge and the engine sounds quite good, and accelerates smoothly and powerfully).

After getting a new catalytic converter to pass the smog check as well as getting a new oil & filter, there remains a few things left to be done asap (I put them in priority order), as the mechanic took a quick look at the drivetrain etc... :

-I need to get new bearings (can hear the bearings during high speed cornering) or possibly a new hub for the front left wheel and thinking of buying the parts and bringing it to a mechanic as its a bit involved it seems as a beginner. I looked on rock auto and it seems there are two items:

1991 TOYOTA COROLLA DLX ALL TRAC 1.6L 1587cc L4 MFI (A) [4AFE] DOHC : Brake/Wheel Hub : Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly $70.79

AND

1991 TOYOTA COROLLA DLX ALL TRAC 1.6L 1587cc L4 MFI (A) [4AFE] DOHC : Brake/Wheel Hub : Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly Repair Kit $100.79

I'm wondering if the cheaper of the two would be adequate, as it seems all the constitutive parts are the same?

- There is a slight rattling due to some dead joints (bushings) in the drivetrain, and they clank ever so audibly when the shifting (its a manual transmission) or any forwards/backwards shifts in momentum. So I need (as my mechanic stated) a new universal joint (he said the rear u joint on the front shaft). Should I search for this at a pick & pull? Can this part come off a regular Corolla of similar years or is it specific? My mechanic also said the whole front drive shaft assembly may need to be replaced.

- The center driveshaft bushings are shot, but I have the part. It is a used piece that came with the wagon as an extra part when sold. A working used rear shaft (with good bushings or so it seems) was installed recently before I purchased the wagon.

- The left inner tie rod on also needs to be replaced, and the part seems to be pretty reasonable on Rock auto. I was considering trying that one out myself, but could also just let shop do that one too after I got the part so I avoit any alignment issues.

-Needs new tires. I plan on taking it to Tahoe in the winter ans want good all-seasons that will be good in the snow, but won't break the bank after all these repairs.

-The mpg also seems a bit on the low end so I'm thinking of doing an Auto-Rx treatment on the vehicle as well to give it an internal cleaning. I don't have a number on that yet as I haven't put a full tank through it yet.

So any help on this long-winded post would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What is the torque split on the automatics?

I am a new all trac owner.

Im a llittle confused on what the power split is on the automatics. I know the manual trans ones is 50/50 and you can lock the diff for the 50/50 power split. What are the automatics? Are they just front wheel drive 90/10 until the front wheels start to slip and then they send up to 50% power to the rear axle (like subaru automatics)? I searched and searched google and nobody has the answer......I would appreciate any information.

5th gear pop out

Hi, new member here. i've owned countless toyotas before and this is my 2nd all-trac. didn't know this site existed until recently. just wanted to see what you guys recommend me to do. its 93 manual 4wd corolla wagon. All the first 4 forward gears and reverse works fine. No crunching, whining or anything like that. however, for some reason, it pops out of 5th only during coasting. even a bit of throttle is enough to keep it in. engine mounts are fine. the 5th slowly works its way back into neutral and the gate disappears. double clutch and it can go back in. some times it whines often times it doesn't. i've owned mr2 and ae92 gts before, is this the same type of problem as the c50 and c52 tranny on those? also, i've done some reading on 1st gen rav4 and it appears that it suffers the same problems. those guys can just pop a trans cover off by the cv and just replace the 5th gear synchro without dropping anything. can i do that for the rolla? worse case scenario, anyone have a known good 5 spd for sale?

I have a 90 Corolla Wagon All Trac, the green light for the AWD went out and did not make a differance when it was working. I'm trying to trouble shoot but I can't find the vacuum solenoids!

I was at Pick and pull to get an exhaust manifold (mine cracked) I pulled one from a 92 and I saw the vacuum solenoids mounted on the firewall on the 92 but I can't find them on my 90 Alltrac! Where are they?
