Just joined your forum. I have an early car, Feb 1988, number 7738. I had been looking for one and found this one just before it went to the wreckers because although rust-free it had an overheated engine. I got it for nothing and had the engine completely rebuilt. I have driven it about 24,000 miles since and it has 259,000 miles total. Everything works except the awd does not lock. We think it is a lazy actuator but need to remove it to see if the link rod will slide to lock the unit.
We also have a Tercel 4wd that has 321,000 miles. We live in the mountains and the Tercel has proved better than my 1997 Jeep Wrangler which I just gave away. Jeep would go sideways up our steep hill in snow and the Jeep heater was useless. The Corolla (Rolla?) sits a little low for snow driving and I am considering 14" wheels as I find the speedometer is about 5% fast and 14" wheels would correct that and give me a little more clearance - maybe new springs. My owners manual shows 14" wheels as an option. I look forward to information exchange. I was completely confused looking at the various photos to see a height control on one wagon. I would like to know more about that.

All:

Has anyone on the forum replaced the wheel bearings in their car?

I live in a part of the country with rediculous labor rates and think I need to do it myself unless I want to be out $1000+.

I am looking around for a FSM so I can get a good idea of what must be done. I know the hubs have to come off and the old bearings pressed out and new bearings pressed in. One shop told me the whole rearend has to be dropped to do the back.

Anyway...typical that no shop around really knows about the car so I need guidance from all of you.

Thanks in advance!

Phil

so I got cutoff and had to swerve into a traffic barrier today, a nifty kind that flips out from the side and has some pretty weak lights on the end so that no one can really see it working. <bitter>

Luckily, my steering wheel isn't on the left, or my face would have been full of glass. The factory glass that came with these things is a little weak, I can't believe the explosion of shards in side. It didn't even cube like auto glass should.

Anyway, new windshield monday, I'll let you know how it goes and post some pics of the 'incident'.
